A 35 mi. x 35 mi. square in the middle of nowhere in Kansas could hold 1000 years' worth of the U.S.'s trash.
Landfills are built on top of solid impermeable surfaces (it's late and I'm tired and this is my last post tonight so I don't know exactly what off the top of my head) and modern ones are completely safe, sanitary, clean, etc. With techniques like compaction and trenching, the space is put to good use. Plus, since most of the trash is paper and construction materials, it's biodegradable anyhow.
Also, global warming is not "BS." There's a nice long thread about it on this forum. Go read, because I don't feel like repeating myself about that right now.
