I doubt it's as thick as they're trying to make it out. A metaphorical island, maybe, but not one you can walk across. I could see clumps and patches that have conglomerated until they look solid, but you'd still fall right through 'em. As for the rest, maybe bits of plastic debris and a general field of dissolved plastics.

But a literal island? About as likely as Nader winning an election.

Considering that Cruise ships go striagt through the heart of 'it' the implications of it being an island or anything close (such as looking solid) is propaganda.
