You know, I was skeptical until I read MSM articles on the issue. I think that the use of the term island is a vast over exaggeration, but a good visual.

Here is the NPR interview with the guy who has discovered the problem. It seems that the media has sensationalized it's reporting a bit, but the problem appears to be legitimate and of great importance.

Robert, did you hear this on Sam Seder's show today too?

This is outrageous.

O. Elephant, why are you having such trouble believing this? We've been dumping our trash into the ocean for decades. Did you think it would just magically disappear?

The valid point that needs to be made from this article is we need to confront the FACT plastics are not breaking down. We need to give serious consideration to alternatives. I am hoping someone will come up with a cellulose type container concept with enzymes that breakdown the cellulose as part of the ingredients in the packaging. For example, use the enzymes they have developed for generating ethanol from cellulose. In short, it would speed the biodegrading process.

I'm guessing you have not even been in the global warming threads to know my position on it, as I've been defending GW from those that attack it. And besides that, I would hope that people see through your ad hominem and personal attack. It shows low quality debating.

I don't think that it would disappear, nor do I think that there is absolutely no trash in the ocean, but this is a gross exageration. Just because I don't buy the exageration, doesn't mean I don't believe the principle at all.

OE covered it, it is a "gross exaggeration". I am undecided on global warming. I am hoping the current one on one will help me take a side. Right now I am leaning towards it being a scare tactic and that it is the natural cyclic nature of the Earth. With a possible Ice age coming up in the near future of the Earth respectively.

Several links filled with facts have been presented. On what do you base your denial on? Where are your facts?

I was spot on with joe on global warming wasn't I? LOL!!! Do you think if you just deny that we are ruining the earth, then we won't be ruining the earth?

The links have not been 'filled with facts', the opening link was 1 paragraph with no links to sources (so their claims cannot be validated) that overly exagerated the entire situation.

And what does one's belief on GW have to do with this? Nothing, discuss the issue, not the poster.
