Peruvian capital city, Lima, has engineered an unusual assist for the city's serious air pollution problem, see the item below.
Be interesting to see how this works and whether in the long term it will be effective enough to impact on the blanket of toxic cloud which covers the city and allow los Peruanos to breathe freely again.
It may also raise a point of interest on replacement of rain forest destroyed by slash and burn...

"Artificial tree" a solution to cut pollution in Lima
By Paco de Campos. Lima, Jan 28 (EFE).- The polluted city of Lima will soon have mechanical "super trees," each one of them capable of purifying enough air so that 20,000 people can breathe easy all day long.
One of these Urban Air Cleaners has the same capacity to absorb carbon dioxide and emit oxygen as 1,200 real trees and to filter 200,000 cubic meters (7.05 million cubic feet) per day, the heads of the project told Efe.
The initiative was started by Tierra Nuestra, a Peruvian firm dedicated to conservation through technological development.

The PAU-20 (or 'Super Tree') is the result of an effort of several years carried out by an interdisciplinary team of engineers and scientists. It has a size of five meters, a total weight of 1200 kg and can purify 200000 cubic metres of air per day, the same amount of air breathed by 20000 people. The innovative device withdraws 100% of germs, dust and bacteria and absorbs at least 8% of the particles emanating from the noxious gases released by cars.
