Oooops...looks like you may have spoken too soon. A deal was NEVER ironed out. Looks like there could be plenty to do on Friday night now.

Like I said in a different thread, this is even more reason to postpone the debate and do what Senators (Obama as well) are supposed to do in financial crisis like this...work through the weekend until a solution is presented.

$700B bailout plan breaks apart; talks to continue
WASHINGTON (AP) — Key members of Congress claimed agreement Thursday on an outline and crucial details of an urgent multibillion-dollar plan to stave off national economic disaster, but a historic White House meeting with President Bush, the two men fighting to replace him and other congressional leaders broke up with conflicts in plain view.

After six days of intensive talks on the $700 billion package urgently requested by the Bush administration, with Wall Street tottering and the presidential election nearing, there was more confusion than clarity.

A tentative accord in principle among influential Democratic and Republican lawmakers was announced at midday, giving the Bush administration just a fraction of the money it wanted up front, with half the $700 billion total subject to a congressional veto, congressional aides said.

But conservatives were still in revolt, balking at the astonishing price tag of the proposal and the heavy hand of government that it would place on private markets. Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama, the top Republican on the Senate Banking Committee, emerged from the White House meeting to say the announced agreement "is obviously no agreement."

Both of Congress' Republican leaders, Rep. John Boehner and Sen. Mitch McConnell, also denied there was any deal. And the White House called the earlier announcement progress but also said it was reviewing the outline with more work needed to finalize a bill for Congress to rush into law.

Actually, it would be much more accurate to say that the promiscuous printing of money "will hyperinflate our currency." It is not my understanding that the bailout would necessarily result in the Treasury's printing additional money.

What? Exactly where do you think they will come up with the money. Of course since they no longer publish the money supply in circulation....how would we ever know.

Other nations are watching and they understand. This will undermine the value of the dollar and risk its utilization as a 'reserve' currancy.

I hope you were joking and are taking measures to protect yourself. You'll wish you did.

I feel sorry for McCains supporters he keeps you on your toes trying to defend him.

As of early this morning he still had not even read the plan.

And he needs to go save the world. and now the GOP that agreed with the deal is trying to save face for McCAin by stalling it!

Also his campaign ads are still running and his campaign offices are still going. Suspend what?

Well here is another tidbit. It does not amount to much but says something to me. At the meeting today in the white house. Obama brought with him a senate office staffer. And McCain brought a campaign staffer.

McCain is going to save the economy, you watch.

They say it appears the house and senate dems are close and that senate repubs are also pretty much in agreement, but the republican house members are the ones not on board. They probably have something prepared for McCain to say that the repub house will say ok, we can agree with that. The bill will be agreed upon by all and then all the repubs will come walking out saying, "that John McCain, we never could have done it without his expert leadership".

Then you will be able to tell who the really ignorant are because they will be the ones coming out saying, "See, thats the kind of guy we want in the Whitehouse, somebody who can get things done!"

I just hope the country is not stupid enough to swallow it.

Oh, so Obama finally figured out that actually doing his job as Senator was a necessity?

Nice to see that Obama is finally (after three years) earning his salary. besides, I thought that obama going to wait until called?

Obama Will Make Debate A Townhall If McCain Doesn't Show

so what is leadership to YO-bama? preparing for the debate or actually getting his hands dirty doing the work?

There is an article that addresses this point in CNNMoney.com: Bailout reality check: Taxpayer exposure - Sep. 18, 2008

I would not attempt to present myself as an expert on economic matters. And I admit to considerable ambivalence about the proposed bailout. Even so, I am not at all sure that the taxpayers will ultimately be placed on the hook. (The Chrysler bailout, way back in 1980, worked out pretty well. So did the rescue of the Mexican currency, in the 1990s.)
