WASHINGTON - The inflation rate shot up in May at the fastest pace in six months, pushed higher by soaring costs for gasoline and other types of energy.

The Labor Department reported Friday that consumer prices rose by 0.6 percent last month, the biggest one-month increase since last November, as gasoline costs surged by 5.7 percent. Food prices, which have also been rising sharply, were up 0.3 percent as the cost of beef and bakery products showed big gains.

Core inflation, however, which excludes energy and food, edged up a more moderate 0.2 percent in May. That increase was right in line with expectations and should help relieve worries that the big increases in food and energy could be breaking through to more widespread inflation.

The cost of gas goes up drastically like this, it becomes the "driving force" behind generalized inflation because the cost of trucking goods, fueling tractors, etc... will be added into costs.

I heard news of the car radio that a free food program for the homeless was closing down here in California. The Program Director said that the program was actually serving a majority of working poor and elderly that simply couldn't afford buying food and other basic survival needs on fixed incomes or low wages plus the high cost now for commuting back and forth to work.

What concerns me is those line graphs that show spikes in speculation. We have got to get these greed money grubbing stockbrokers out of the middle of our oil transactions. It is hurting Americans and its time to put some hurt on them right back.

Don't count out the floods in the eastern mid west. From what I am hearing in the background it will rise some prices too.

No, it isn't the flooding that raises prices. The flooding is just another excuse that people use in an attempt to justify price increases.

I really wish people would stop treating the rise and fall of prices as if this was something that just sort of magically happens all by itself without human direction.
