I've burned more American flags than you folks probably would believe. Granted, each and every one was at the end of a moving ceremony to retire said flags. And I think each radical flag burner should avail themselves to a true ceremonial flag burning. But alas, I believe it is a compete abuse of freedom of speech, but freedom of speech (expression) nonetheless.

More often than not I lead them. I have been active in Boy Scouts for many years. We do at least two ceremonies a year at our campouts. At the annual family campout we do the full ceremony where we burn each stripe then the field of stars. That way each of the boys has a line to recite. Gives you a deep appreciation for that wonderful piece of cloth.

To burn a flag if indigenous of the country in my opinion means treason.
For immigrants, or those residing, illegal or not who burns the flag of their host country should be tried for treason, and in the UK, although that law done away with in the 1960's not exist anymore... The Saddam swing! But just my opinion. Phil. |

Gentlemen,
The flag of the US is a piece of cloth and burning it does no more harm to the United States than burning the Bible does to God: none. Is it offensive? Yes, but so what? In the US we have the right to speak our truth even if it is offensive to some. Burning the flag says far more about the people who do it than it does about our country. We need to be very careful to allow everyone to SPEAK their views lest they feel that they need to act out their views violently with bombs or guns. Let's be very clear, many people find Christian proselytizing offensive, others think that homosexuals campaigning for equal rights is offensive, however we let everyone speak even if we don't like what they say. I personally find the KKK and the white supremacy group's words offensive, but I would not take away their right to speak their piece. If there is offensive speech in this country today it has to be Fred Phelps and Westboro Baptist Church folks protesting at the funerals of our soldiers, but we let them do it because THIS IS AMERICA AND WE HAVE FREE SPEECH. |

The flag does not mean what it used to.
It's something people paste on their vehicles and then think it means they're patriotic. People who have those stickers that say "These colors never run"--but the sticker is so FADED that it looks like a silver and white flag? There's some irony somewhere in there.... I think the idea that the flag should be some sacred item that people can be arrested for desecrating is as silly as arresting people for desecrating a Bible. |
