NEW YORK (Reuters) - A Bush administration plan to define several widely used contraception methods as abortion is a "gratuitous, unnecessary insult" to women and faces tough opposition, Sen. Hillary Clinton said on Friday.

The former Democratic presidential candidate joined family planning groups to condemn the proposal that defines abortion to include contraception such as birth control pills and intrauterine devices.

It would cut off federal funds to hospitals and states where medical providers are obligated to offer legal abortion and contraception to women.

"We will not put up with this radical, ideological agenda to turn the clock back on women's rights," the New York senator told a joint news conference with New York Rep. Nita Lowey, also a Democrat, at Bellevue Hospital.

"Women would watch their contraceptive coverage disappear overnight," said Clinton.

The planned rule is aimed at countering recent state laws enacted to ensure that women can get contraception when they want or need it. It also would help protect the rights of medical providers to refuse to offer contraception.

She also urged people to sign a petition on her website, HillPac
, against the proposed changes.

Well, I'm not exactly surprised. One thing I'll say about Bush and this Administration is that they are certainly consistent. They've followed their philosophies and agendas to a T, and haven't allowed facts or reality or contrary information dissuade them.

This, just like the abortion debate, boils down to whether you value quality of life versus merely quantity of life.

To call other forms of contrception like IUDs and pills "abortion" is simply ludicrous. If an egg isn't fertilized in the first place.....ahh, I shouldn't need to explain this.

But, if we take the Bush premise to it's logical conclusion, then every woman that's menstruated her unfertilized egg is guilty of murder, not to mention every man who, daily, allows millions of sperm to die off unused. I know conservatism tends to be rather regressive, but to want to turn the clock back to pre-contraceptive times is extreme, unrealistic and arrogant.

Is this really what they are going after, here? Procreation for the sake of it? Or, is it something more sinister, wishing to disempower women to engage in sex for pleasure, out of spite? Damned women, how dare they?

The federal government has no business funding medical procedures or treatment of any kind. It needs to get out of the healthcare business entirely.

Yes, it's their fault. It's their fault that they're not exercising control over their bodies by refusing to let these horny bastards penetrate them in the first place. It's their fault they believe the line these guys feed them about love and the whole "If you loved me you'd have sex with me" thing.

What the hell this has to do with the thread or with my earlier post, I don't know.

I don't know if anthropologists are aware of that but if you think that expecting people to take responsibility and to bear the consequences for their own damned choices is neanderthal then there's definitely something wrong with your thinking.

If anything, we need even more ways to prevent births, instead of limiting people.

Going with Chan's premise that every woman that gets pregnant is a complete moron, do we really want to force that genetic material to be perpetuated? Or, is our smug righteousness worth the price in unwanted babies?

And, something for conservative libertarians to consider: unwanted pregnancies may lead to welfare! So, it's your choice, either encourage contraception or be satisfied with a huge bureaucracy dedicated to child and unwed mother welfare. Perhaps another huge, nosy bureaucracy that stations agents around to ensure nobody fools around? Your call.

Personally, I think we have enough people here, competing for resources. Spewing babies out, based on some sort of moralistic righteousness, is not societally cost-effective or responsible.
