A council has been accused of discriminating against homosexuals over plans to clear undergrowth from a notorious gay cruising spot.

Bristol City Council wants to prune bushes and remove cover from an area known as the Downs to improve the landscape and encourage rare wildlife.

But its own gay rights group has opposed the move, claiming that cutting back the bushes was "discriminating" to homosexual men who used the area for late night outdoor sex known as dogging.

Work on the beauty spot has been temporarily delayed while talks with gay rights groups take place to try and break the deadlock.

The area of the Downs sits at the top of the Avon Gorge, in the upmarket Clifton suburb of Bristol and is home to various species of rare plants and wildlife.

But councillors said it had become overgrown over the past 20 years.

Thick bushes cover the secluded area next to a street known Circular Road which has become a mecca for gay men and couples cruising for sex.
No, now that's just crazy talk.

not discriminatory. They need to get a room or else go someplace less "public". Just because its become a favorite spot for gay men cruising for sex doesn't mean its "discriminatory" to cut the underbrush so it won't be so enticing...anymore than a plan to cut the underbrush so that a spot will be less enticing to heterosexuals cruising for late night outdoor sex would be to heterosexual exhibitionists.

I've had a few bouts in the great outdoors myself. (heterosexual) ...part of the excitement is the possibility of getting "caught".....but that's part of the risk, too. I never expected any park to provide a bonking ground for it, and keep it holy to heterosexuals.

Well, if they want to be ultra PC and OK this area for gay men, the least they can do is enrap the trees in bushes in latex. Landscape condoms! (^:

thats just too funny for words. a perfect example of PCness running amuck. you wanna have sex outside? gay or straight you are probably going to be arrested.

i have a better idea. instead of tearing out the bushes, try planting poison ivy and/or poison oak there. them let them get naked and roll around in the bushes. after one time they may think twice about returning there

I have seen a hippy couple at a public beach simply pull a blanket over themselves hump away with people walking by all around them.

Then I was at a World Music Festival. I wanted to get away from the loud sound system on stage and find some shade from the sun. When I found my spot I looked up and immediately felt something was wrong with the what I was seeing. Then I spotted a young couple lap dancing with people all around them transfixed on the musical group on stage. No one else even noticed.
