Default U.S. School District to Begin Microchipping Students

If I had a child in this school system I'd be screaming bloody murder about this, before yanking my child out of the local public school:

U.S. School District to Begin Microchipping Students

by David Gutierrez

A Rhode Island school district has announced a pilot program to monitor student movements by means of radio frequency identification (RFID) chips implanted in their schoolbags.

The Middletown School District, in partnership with MAP Information Technology Corp., has launched a pilot program to implant RFID chips into the schoolbags of 80 children at the Aquidneck School. Each chip would be programmed with a student identification number, and would be read by an external device installed in one of two school buses. The buses would also be fitted with global positioning system (GPS) devices.

Parents or school officials could log onto a school web site to see whether and when specific children had entered or exited which bus, and to look up the bus's current location as provided by the GPS device.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has criticized the plan as an invasion of children's privacy and a potential risk to their safety.

It looks like MAP Information Technology Corp. had a successful marketing campaign in this school district and I hope this company is stopped before it spreads its invasive, Big Brother-ish technology elsewhere. This is horrifying.

Um... why is that such a big deal? It is in their schoolbag, not their body. It only works in relation to the school bus. The only info on the "chip" is their student ID number which is read by a device on the bus and logs them in and out of the bus. You have to log into a website to see the info. It is no different than using a cell phone with GPS... actually, it is far less invasive than the cell phone, since it only tracks when and where the kids enter and exit the school bus.

Of course, my husband has all of his employees tracked by GPS all day long, so maybe that influences my opinion.

This is no different than kids having school ID cards that they use to check in and out. And I am sure that if you truly were against it, you could opt out. No need to panic.

That's it exactly. This is just another way for Big Brother to get his foot in the door with the aid of Corporate America who will profit from a surveillance society.

How is knowing when a child gets on and off the bus "surveillance"? Seems more of a safety issue to me.

RFID can be suited for many different needs. The potential for abuse or miss handling is great.

Ah, but that's how the government gets the American sheeple to accept such things. The government feeds you this line about how it's "for the children's safety" or "Don't you want to protect your children?" and then they've got you hooked. First it's chips in the backpacks; then, when enough children forget their backpacks or bring a different backpack, it's chips in the skin.

"Why?" asks the confused waiter, as the panda makes toward the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder.

"I'm a panda," he says at the door. "Look it up."

The waiter turns to the relevant entry and, sure enough, finds an explanation.

"Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves."

And who says people aren't paranoid?

Do you also object to people having to carry ID cards for school and work and having to sign in? OMG! They make kids sign in at school! They track when they are in school! You are right! It is the start of an evil plan! lol

No, I don't object to these - at least not in their present form. Once they start putting microchips in them and storing additional information on them, then I'll object.

I don't have a problem with that - as long as it isn't with technology such as microchips implanted in the skin or with technology that can be expanded to other uses.
