Lowering the age of drinking to 18 makes me think of high school graduation nights. The long term trend has been an epidemic of teen car crashes due to alcohol. And some of those students are 18 by time they graduate. I hate seeing these accidents predictably every year with automobiles wrapped around trees with kids killed or maimed for life as a result.

Perhaps give ONE warning and a suspended license, but do it again, then you lose it permanently. You shouldn't be mollycoddled when you are a threat to public safety as drunks are when on the road.
You could also say that we shouldn't put other dangerous people in prison either, given it will create hardships for the family.

Doesn't sound like you are from the U.S.
First offense = 6 mos suspended license + 1 yr probation Second offense = revoked license + 1 yrs in jail Third offense (or without a license) = felony (5 yrs in prison) Kill someone and it is second degree murder (used to be vehicular manslaughter). Sounds real lenient now doesn't it? It also depends on which state. Can we apply these standards to those who are too busy talking on a phone, or putting on makeup to drive safely? |
