leviathon435 has a spectacular aura about
Default Chivalry

So, is chivalry a good thing, a throw-back to an era with more respect or is it just low-level sexism by another name? It might also be useful to define chivalry, so what are your definitions? Do you consider yourself chivalrous or not?

P.s. Obviously I don't want people telling me that they are knights and do jousting etc.

But I do! I'm in the SCA!

Not really, but I had to bring them up when you mentioned knights and jousting.

Anywho, Chivalry was the best ethical system of the time, and that's all there is to it. Times have changed and it no longer applies to modern situations. There are some fringe things that can be applied to modern day life (mainly in respect to the lady-folk), but the core concepts of chivalry are outdated.

I still practice chivalry, however, when I am in professional situations, I treat a woman just like I would any other person. No preferencial treatment based on gender. But yes, when I am not at work or busy doing buisness, then I do treat women with a greater degree of respect than I would most other people.

Isn't that a little cold-hearted? And more than a little...boring?

I fail to see what you mean. Boring, perhaps, but honest, yes.

Well I'm sorry locke, but I just don't believe you.

If a pretty woman comes into your professional world and looks up at you and touches your arm and asks for your opinion as the most intelligent man in the room, I think you would cave like all the rest.

Maybe, it depends on our history and how she's treated me and my associates in the past. On the otherhand, I would immediately become suspicious of anyone who calls me "the most intelligent man in the room" because they would be lying to my face.

Ditto, unless I was in a SPED classroom at the time.

Men are eternally susceptible to the suggestion of adulation. They want to be heroes. Any woman who implies adulation is likely to find a male susceptible.
And a smile will get a woman many things.
The strongest of men is happy to completely ignore past history when tempted by competent feminine charms.
I understand that your comment is what you would like to believe, but it's a question of ego.

I'm way less mean to girls than guys. Reason? I've noticed that girls don't joke around the same way that guys do. Just my personal experience. A comment that would be of no account around my male friends, made offhand to a girl, can cause her to cry (this happened to me). I'm not trying to be sexist or anything, and I'm sorry if you feel patronized, but my experience is that girls are less emotionally calloused, if you will.
