Bad enough? What thoughts are illegal?

but when there is a mass movement to make that become law, the lines have been crossed and it is very hard to go back to living in a society with truely free speech.

There are no such laws in the U.S. The only speech that is illegal is that which would cause harm to others (inciting riots, crying "fire" in a theatre," etc.).

It's not that I want people to deliberately be disrespectful, that's not it at all, in fact, I would be totally against someone doing that, however, don't they have a right to voice their opinions without fear of oppression?
There is no opinion in America that is illegal.

It was a what if.
What if society decides that some words cause "emotional harm" and bans them.
If that happens we will have to mark a very sad day in history down.

Freedom will be lost. There is a difference between banning and discouraging heavily. The discouraging will eventually change mindsets while maintaining freedom.

Where does "discourage" go beyond what is acceptable? What about this?
Speech under fire - Washington Blade

Since my wife is a manager of a corporate entity, I won't post her picture on anything connected with this web identity. This mess ain't worth it.

I agree with the company's policy. I disagree obviously with -the idea of capitalism but in a capitalist society it is for each company to make as much money as it can, by allowing an employee to associate the company with homophobia it loses some potential. Far from the freedom of speech and gay rights issues involved it was a bad business move and that is something the company can sack him for.

Tristan: there are plenty of opinions, which, if aired, are illegal in America. Even if you try to make a joke at an airport you can get arrested for it.

It was shown in court that the text he sent out didn't have that much information attached. Someone at the publication sleuthed his information and attached it.

And it was shown in court that his rights were infringed and he won.

WorldNetDaily: Allstate terminates manager over homosexuality column
Barber stressed to the unemployment office that he did not intend for the affiliation to be included in the bio. Allstate argued to the agency that Barber should not be given unemployment, but upon investigation, the agency agreed with Barber's contention and ruled he was entitled to the money.

Said the agency's report: "The claimant was discharged from Allstate Insurance Company because an outside organization had complained about an article he had written while on his own time."

The state agency also ruled Barber did not engage in misconduct, saying, "The term misconduct means the deliberate and willful violation of a reasonable rule or policy of the employer. … In this case, the claimant's action which resulted in his discharge was not deliberate and willful."

Yup. Say "bomb" when going through airport security. Or "explosive." Maybe try "radiation," just for ****s and giggles. I said once, "What, do you think it's a bomb?" when the security guys were taking too long to x-ray my guitar, and they got all stuffy and pulled me off to the side to pat me down. Not "illegal," but apparently it's now reasonable justification to search your person and your luggage. And to grope your crotch. I really hope that guy wasn't gay.

Yeh, one of my Mum's colleagues got detained and missed his flight for saying bomb at an American airport, he just made a silly joke.

making jokes about bombs at an airport to security has nothing to do with political correctness
