I think we need to look at population in terms of resources available to sustain those people and renew themselves (ie.: over fishing is a problem today). But quality of life is and should be on the table too. Some cities are really awful due to crowding. Noisy, dirty, crime ridden in some, stress...not my cup of tea!

However, I am a country brat and prefer space and sky - not everyone cares for that either. Also, war has a way of dwindling populations (or did in the past) as does deseases sucuh as viruses, aides, and such. Nature has a way of fighting back.

Here in the holler, cows greatly outnumber people and that's the way I like it!

@picassoscat: well put, nature does keep us in check pretty well. However, that's the threat of extinction.

you are absolutely right. and i think that when nature fights back nowadays it just goes unnoticed. there are the thing that really get noticed like when someone gets eaten by an animal that is just trying to live. i think that the population has been taken care of better then we let on. and i am a country boy so i am with you when you say that you would rather live with open sky and space. i have never really had to deal with population. thank goodness

Hmmm. I have five kids. Time for them to go pull straws I guess. I'll let the two with the longest straws live.

I'm not sure how big Jacksonville is, but if each person in the world were to stand side by side and front to back (to make a giant square), the population of the world would take a little over 19 square miles to fit everyone, and that's giving you a 24 inch by 12 inch space to live.

Overpopulation is not measured by the pysical number of bodies you can fit into a space, but how well that space can keep a number of people alive. We don't have much more room for growing food for more people.

i see what you mean, but i would disagree there is still alot of land that has not been used by humans and i don't think will. and i am not talking about the north and south polls but land inbetween that we could use but don't.

The only large chunks of land that aren't being fully used are Canada, Eastern Russia, Northern Afria, and Western Australia. But most of those aren't hospitible for good plant growth. Either too cold or too hot.

2 children is relatively normal around where I live, and if you consider world-wide.....a lot of children don't survive, so 2 surviving children per couple would keep the population static.

You know that's not what I meant. I was stating a predicting trend, sheesh.

Actually there's 7 kids in my family, 7 in my dad's, 9 in my mom's, so I'm REALLY not stating what I think should happen, I was stating what I saw happening, and my predictions.
