Default Take a civics test

Quote:
Are you more knowledgeable than the average citizen? The average score for all 2,508 Americans taking the following test was 49%; college educators scored 55%. Can you do better? Questions were drawn from past ISI surveys, as well as other nationally recognized exams.

I was disappointed with my score of 81.82% but at least it was better than average.

Very concerned that my score had something to do with the fact I was half awake. Went back and noticed a few I answered wrong just because I misread them.

I scored 90.91 percent (30 out of 33)--although I missed two out of the last seven, thereby resulting in a lower lower score than the start might have suggested.

The fact that "college educators" scored only 55 percent is rather telling--and deeply troubling.

Teachers scoring 55%??? No wonder America's kids are under educated. This country's teachers need to hit the books some more.

I didn't find it too difficult.

Answers to Your Missed Questions:

Question #30 - C. decreasing taxes and increasing spending

I disagree with that answer, by the way. The government spending more money isn't going to help the economy.

"I'm a panda," he says at the door. "Look it up."

The waiter turns to the relevant entry and, sure enough, finds an explanation.

"Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves."

I didn't know the philosopher question legitimately, but this one pissed me off:

33) If taxes equal government spending, then:
A. government debt is zero
B. printing money no longer causes inflation
C. government is not helping anybody
D. tax per person equals government spending per person
E. tax loopholes and special-interest spending are absent

Do they mean government spending ON each person, or a simple division of spending/person? I took it to mean the former, since simple division of the two numbers isn't a valid way to measure government expenditures.

I took it to mean that the amount of federal tax a person pays is his or her "share" of the government spending. It would almost be like dividing the national debt by the total population of American citizens.

You answered 26 out of 33 correctly — 78.79 % A few of those would have been right if I read the question correctly (I am a poor multiple choice test taker, essay questions were always my strong suit). I disagree with this answer,
Question #1 - E. life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, I thought the verse was changed from life, liberty and property to pursuit of happiness way later after the declaration was adopted, am I correct?

No, the text of the Declaration of Independence says "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." The concept of "life, liberty and property" is certainly consistent with the philosophical framework on which the declaration was based (particularly John Locke's philosophy).
