Default Now That We Have An Afro-American President

Will the right wingers demand the end to affirmative action?
Affirmative action foes point to Obama - The Boston Globe

WASHINGTON - Leading opponents of affirmative action are increasingly seizing on Illinois Senator Barack Obama's historic run for the presidency as proof that race-based remedies for past discrimination are no longer necessary.
They do have a point....

Even the Wall Street Journal has opened this can of worms in Election of Obama Recasts National Conversation on Race - WSJ.com

It's had to maintain Blacks are discriminated against with Obama as president...do you see this as something the right wingers will rally around? Certainly Obama is going to have a difficult time justifying such policies while he's the top dog....

While I think that the election of President Elect Obama is a great step towards equality I also know that it doesn't mean that we have reached equality in this nation. 50% of this nations incarcerated are people of color where as they only make up 13% of the nation.

That is not becuase they are more criminally minded but becuase they are more likely to turn to crime because their choices in life are limited. Bad schools, A culture that has been damaged by the endemic racism on the streets of this nation and a society that doesn't invest money in fixing these problems all leads to the continuing racism that is in this nation and until we fix those issues there will still be inequality in this nation.

I am all about ending discrimination, thus I am all about ending AA which is simple government enforced discrimination. I supported ending it regardless of the choice in president.

Nonsense! Poor black folks are just as limited in their choices as poor white folks. You are so full of crap on this silly notion that poverty made them do it! People commit crimes for only one reason: they choose to. Most poor folks - regardless of skin color are not out there committing crimes. You think that throwing more money at a problem is going to fix it. Well, you know what: New York State is number 2 in the nation in terms of education spending per student across the board (not spending more in the rich districts and less in the poor districts; state spending has nothing to do with specific districts that are also funded by LOCAL school taxes) and students aren't performing anywhere near that level.

Bad schools don't cause crime.

Racism doesn't cause crime.

Poverty doesn't cause crime.

Crime is a CHOICE!

"Why?" asks the confused waiter, as the panda makes toward the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder.

"I'm a panda," he says at the door. "Look it up."

The waiter turns to the relevant entry and, sure enough, finds an explanation.

"Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves."

If you want to end discrimination, stop dividing people up into all these different groups. When everyone in America decides to be American and nothing else, then we can start treating everyone like Americans.

Government discrimination would seem to be unconstitutional. I have no problem if private companies and universities want to put diversity over quality.

AA to me is the government saying to blacks "Hey guys, we know you are all below us white folk so why dont we give you a 'fair chance' you know, so you can be like us" Who in the world would be okay with someone demeaning them in such a manner.

Your argument is flawed. Affirmative Action programs have been around for over 45 years. There is obviously no correlation between such programs and incarceration statistics. {Remember, you're not discussing this with a right winger.}

If we follow your logic, any program that fails justifies itself. One cannot argue that Afro-Americans are discriminated against when the president of the USA is one.

This is a flawed argument. The only way to address inherent discrimination in a society is with programs that are themselves discriminatory. The fact that AA is discriminatory is not a reason to end it.

And you are wrong for thinking that way...

So if discrimination exists, how can the government address it without being discriminatory?

So we should address the discriminatory inclinations of the society by dummy down the systems that run it? Discrimination is not simply a problem that rests on the surface. However, after two generations, 45 years, there is no reason to believe the problem hasn't been addressed.
