Oregon Ballot Measure 57 (2008 - Ballotpedia)
Oregon Ballot Measure 61 (2008 - Ballotpedia) Both of these regard higher punishment for crimes such as identity theft, selling hard drugs (cocaine, meth, and so on, not marijuana). However the main differences are that 57 - does not require prison time being served and focuses on rehibilitation. While it does impose higher minimum time being served, it still allows the criminals to be given probation (so no time served). 61 - requires manditory minimum time served (for same crimes). Right now, a large % of these crimes recieve no jail time at all (of identity theft, on 50% of 4th time offenders actuall go to jail for it). That is the only thing that it covers. No rehab, nothing other than forcing the convicted felons to go to jail. Another thing with these two, is that both can not pass. If both do, the one that wins with the most votes is implimented, and the other is not (so if 61 wins with 55% and 57 wins with 60%, m61 will be scraped, while m57 passes).

A panda walks into a cafe. He orders a sandwich, eats it, then draws a gun and fires two shots in the air. "Why?" asks the confused waiter, as the panda makes toward the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder. "I'm a panda," he says at the door. "Look it up." The waiter turns to the relevant entry and, sure enough, finds an explanation. "Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves." |

Even if they didn't require a tax increase I still would have voted them both down. Jail time for ingesting particular substances is just stupid.

There is no jail time in these bills for consuming anything. Only for the manufacturing and distributation of it (it also addresses ID theft, regular theft, and car theft).

What does rehabilitation (drug rehab) have to do with selling drugs? As for the other crimes, those are entirely separate and what kind of rehabilitation does someone undergo for being a damned thief?

rehab is not just for adtictions, it is for correcting any problem that prevents people from being able to interact in society in a safe and civil way. People do things for a reason, correcting that "reason" can prevent the incident from repeating later in life.

If you wanted a state full of criminals walking around you made the right vote.

In no way could a vote for 57 create any more criminals. 61 does nothing to correct criminal behavoir. Despite what ads say, 57 wont create more criminals getting probation, it just won't correct that issue, which can be addressed by changing the judges in our courts instead. Oregon already has a very low crime rate compared to most other states, so we don't have to worry about "a state full of criminals."

Southern Man, let me make sure you get this. People under the influence of marijuana are in no condition to commit any kind of crime. I don't know about the other stuff, but if you can find an instance where people committed a criminal act while high on weed, I will take my hat off to you.
