![]() Obama photo in GOP club newsletter sparks outrage - Los Angeles Times A Republican women's club in San Bernardino County sent out a recent newsletter with a photo of Barack Obama surrounded by fried chicken, watermelon and ribs, sparking widespread outrage and rebuke from GOP leaders and Democrats. Now when pushed she said the mailer merely parodied the statements Obama made during a debate last summer and wasn't racist. I ask you defend this. Find some way those foods were chosen completely randomly.

Of course this is racist. But Sen. Obama is hardly a victim in this matter, in any meaningful sense of the word. More precisely, he stands to be the beneficiary of the sympathy that anti-racist Americans--which is to say, most Americans--are likely to feel toward him; and the corresponding revulsion that they will be prone to feel toward those who have associated themselves with such viciousness.
Of course, the (understandable) revulsion toward a handful of racists, who happen to support Sen. McCain, is no good reason to vote for Sen. Obama. But many voters do not think along purely logical lines. So I would imagine that this sort of racist attack will do far more to help Sen. Obama than it will to harm him. |

I'd say that it isn't racist. It is stupid and hateful, but not racist (meaning that it does not attack him based on him being black). It attacks him (and his supporters) as poor (thus the food stamps) and as a democrat (thus the donkey).

Fried Chicken, Kool aid, Watermelon, and Barbecue ribs. any one of those things and maybe you would have a point but all of those come on OE I hope you just overlooked that and actually do not think that was random.

I've heard of fried chicken being considered "black" food, but I've never heard of any of the others being considered "black" foods. I've heard of them being considered "southern" foods (like in the country song "watermelon crawl" by Tracy Byrd), mainly due to the fact that they are great on hot summer days (nothing beats a barbarque on hot summer evenings), which the south has a lot of, and the white folks too consume these products.
