Jose Medellin, the convicted murder of two teenage girls, has at last been executed by the state of Texas. Those who oppose the death penalty on principle (which I do not) may object. But the overriding point here, it seems to me, was summed up nicely by Jerry Strickland, a spokesman for the Texas Attorney General's Office, prioe to the execution: "The law is clear: Texas is not bound by the World Court [which had tried to have the execution stopped], but by the U.S. Supreme Court, which reviewed this matter and determined that this convicted murderer's execution shall proceed."
This is an important point--in fact, the overarching point: Americans must never be bound be foreign courts; the highest possible authority, for American citizens, must always remain the decisions of the US Supreme Court, irrrespective of the pontifications of any non-US body. Here are two links on the subject, one from last spring, and one from immediately after the execution: Newsmax.com - Court Backs Texas in Dispute With Bush General News - Mexican-born killer put to death in Texas |
