Violence is at its lowest point since the war has started. That does not mean that it has stopped but it is damn low for a war. But you have no interest in actually debating the topic at hand do you....

McCain went as part of an official congressional delegation, which is entirely different from what is going on here. Had Obama gone to Iraq and elsewhere as part of an official congressional delegation, there would be no basis for this thread and Rice's policy directive would not have implications in the present presidential race.

The policy itself is entirely appropriate: the federal government (including America's embassies) don't work for the political candidates.

"Why?" asks the confused waiter, as the panda makes toward the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder.

"I'm a panda," he says at the door. "Look it up."

The waiter turns to the relevant entry and, sure enough, finds an explanation.

"Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves."

As a candidate abroad, McCain had the right to all those embassy services - but I agree that I sure as hell wouldn't.

It was simply proof that the marketplace was a safe place for a stroll - as long as it's cleared and you're surrounded by heavily armed troops.

Not if the embassy is expected to arrange it - at least not now.

Yes - the surge has worked. Let's declare victory and get our butts outta there!

And yeah - the point of this is the federal govt should be neutral - not allowing one candidate what the other is denied.

On the McCain security issue - I see two possible causes. One is that he deliberately revealed the info knowing the risks - the other is that he is too senile to realize the risk. Either one does not make me want to vote for him.

No, as a candidate, McCain did not have the right to embassy services. As part of a CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION he would.

But the war is still going on. If we lose the Sunni as our allies not only will violence come back but since we've now supplied and trained them, it will come back with a vengeance.
