I agree with what you say but I don't think that many on the right will have the same mind set.

And as long as they see fit to bring up old news and call it a test of character I see no reason why McCain's proven character issues should be ignored just becuase they happened a while ago.

They seem to think that his Vietnam experience gives him credit and that happened long before the keating five.

I will... Even if Obama himself said it 20 years ago, I don't feel it is relevant today.

I do consider extenuating circumstances when evaluating the words and acts of people in their youth or many years ago.

Here's what I mean.

Twenty years ago, the racial tension was far greater, and discrimination far more widespread than it is today. If both Obama and his wife made "Whitey" comments back then, I think they should both get a pass considering what they had to deal with growing up. That pass doesn't apply if they were said since Obama entered politics, because they have grown up. To say such things now (or in the recent past) reflects how they view the world today, as adults.

That is also the reason I give McCain a pass on the alleged "Gook" comments, because of what he went through in his past as a POW.

Nothing is set in stone. There are always circumstances to consider when evaluating a persons past, and I always take them into account.

Just because it is old, is no reason to ignore it, but this topic has been discussed to ribbons when he was running for senate back in 1791. There are no new angles on it. It was thrown against him when he ran for re-election and he won, that shows that the voters don't care about it all that much.
