Default Why Obama and his church is such a big issue

I realize we have had a lot of threads on the "Obama and his church" issue, but we have had very little understanding from the left side of the political fence, on why this is such a big deal. I think this discussion on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" show between Tucker Carlson and Mika Brzezinski, gets right to the heart of why this is such a hot topic.

I am no fan of Tucker Carlson by and stretch, but in this segment he absolutely nails it. That's why I'm posting both the relevant parts of the transcripts of the show, as well as a link to the Youtube video so you can see it for yourself. I have highlighted the parts that explain why this is a big issue.

This conversation takes place after them showing the Father Pfleger sermon:

CARLSON: They love it! They're on their feet. Now this is, again, Obama's home congregation. I'm not saying that for partisan reasons. I'm saying it because it gets to an unanswered and I think burning question which has never been resolved, which is: what the hell were you doing in that church for 20 years? Didn't you notice that?

BRZEZINSKI: It's a good question. I also think there are questions about these churches and the differences between certain churches, but right now what we can talk about --

CARLSON: What does that mean?

BRZEZINSKI: Well, I mean, you know, when it comes to this, I think the thing we ought to look at is potential political ramifications, and there will be some. Whether they are long term or short term, I don't know.

CARLSON: Well I'm interested in the spiritual ramifications.

BRZEZINSKI: I am too.

CARLSON: If you describe this church as your spiritual home, the place that shaped you as a man, morally, and the congregation is on its feet cheering this kind of crap, what does that say?

BRZEZINSKI: I want to hear from them.

CARLSON: I want an explanation.

BRZEZINSKI: I want to hear from them. I certainly don't want to sit here—four white people—assessing this church.

CARLSON: Oh, I do! I think that's totally fair. By the way, the preacher was white! I don't think this has to do with race: it has to do with hatred.
Hatred... Racial hatred.

That's what this is about, and that is what Obama has surrounded himself with for 20 years. The fact that he separates himself from the church now, is absolutely irrelevant.

I agree with your conclusion, and I'd also like to add a thought to that...

Obama was planning on leaving his church for quite some time now, but he couldn't because of the backlash that he would have received from his voter base. He needed a way out. And what better way to separate himself from the church than to blame it on a white racist priest. A perfect, yet suspicious opportunity for him to do it. Just a theory, but it does make sense.

Can we just have one flipping thread about this? Do you have to clutter the board with so many threads about THE SAME STUPID THING? Next you will start to talk about how Obama wears too much green.

At least no one's said it's because he's black.

It's only a big issue to those that see it as an issue. Most of america doesn't care about his church and what his church has done, and there is no reason that they should.

Not to be mean, but how do you know most of America doesn't care?

I have to disagree. There are MANY Americans that cared about it. Many of them just werent expressing it out of the fear that they'd be shunned by their Obamite buddies. Once again, the blind loyalty played a large factor in why mant Americans turned the blind eye to the facts.

We need to see an actual poll to say "his church is such a big issue." Youtube is entertaining, but it is no foundation to make this assertion.

Talking about the "Bubba factor" - I have a few farmer Bubba's in my extended family. They care about his church issues, they buy into each and every trivial smear on Obama, and the bottom line with them is that they will never vote for an African American. They are racist.

Everyone else I know either don't care or hate the Republicans for the current smear campaign.

"Many of them just werent expressing it" - that is the old "silent majority" trick. I'm not buying into that one. This is 2008 and we need a poll.
