Default Obama Advisor: 60,000 Troops Should Stay In Iraq Through 2010

For all of you that thought Obama has the answer to bring the troops home, I am sorry to say that "I told you so". Everyone has been following his campaign promises, especially the one about ending the war and bringing the troops home (better known as redeployment). Well, it seems that the change he promised his supporters may come in the form of Obama changing his policy on how and when he will bring home the troops from Iraq. His truths are starting to rear their ugly heads.

Quote:
Obama Advisor: 60,000 Troops Should Stay In Iraq Through 2010
A key adviser to Senator Obama's campaign is recommending in a confidential paper that America keep between 60,000 and 80,000 troops in Iraq as of late 2010, a plan at odds with the public pledge of the Illinois senator to withdraw combat forces from Iraq within 16 months of taking office.

The paper, obtained by The New York Sun, was written by Colin Kahl for the center-left Center for a New American Security. In "Stay on Success: A Policy of Conditional Engagement," Mr. Kahl writes that through negotiations with the Iraqi government "the U.S. should aim to transition to a sustainable over-watch posture (of perhaps 60,000-80,000 forces) by the end of 2010 (although the specific timelines should be the byproduct of negotiations and conditions on the ground)."

Obama Adviser Suggests Up to 80,000 Troops Remain in Iraq By 2010
As Barack Obama continues to criticize John McCain for saying he’s willing to keep a 100-year troop presence in Iraq, another Obama adviser has suggested U.S. forces could stay in Iraq longer than the Democratic candidate initially thought.

Adviser Colin Kahl wrote in a policy paper for the Center for a New American Security that the United States should transition to an “over-watch” force of between 60,000 and 80,000 troops by the end of 2010, according to an article Friday in the New York Sun.

That appears to be at odds with Obama’s public position of removing all combat brigades from the country within 16 months of taking office.

Heard this on the Radio the other day. Maybe Obama's adviser realizes that this is not as simple as "lets pull everyone out tomorrow". I am curious to see what others have to say about this issue.

As long as there's a definitive plan to get the troops out, I think that's what really matters. If there's no plan at all to get the troops out, we could well be in there for as long as McCain seems to think we'll be there. If there's no plan and we still just try to yank the troops out of there, we could cause more problems than when we first went in there, it could be a massacre, very ugly.

I just don't think he's going to do things according to the plan that has been given to him.

Voting by conjecture about the future? My magical crystal ball got stuck between a yes and no response, so my guess is NO. Nice to see that we moved on from his cousin, wife, and minister to his campaign advisor.

This is more or less what I proposed a while back. Pull out most of our forces, but leave a small force to step in if things get out of hand, then pull them out too.

Well to be fair it's already ugly over there and I think it'd be wise to withdraw but leave some there.

I won't vote in this poll because it is apparent that the Obama camp is in disarray over their inconsistent position on withdrawl. They don't seem to know what they want to do.

McCain has stated from the outset that it will be necessary to maintain a reduced presence in Iraq for the foreseeable future. It would seem that Obama, having vehemently criticized McCain in the past, is now coming around to McCain's way of thinking about withdrawl.

Right on, finally they are on the issues.

2010 is only 2 years into the presidency. 60,000 troops is half of what we have there now. That's how he promised to end the war, carefully. What's the problem?

No, McCain will keep stay the course. Obama will end the war.

There's no disarray. This is exactly what Obama's been saying for years. He intends to get our troops out of Iraq as carefully as they were careless going in.

Nothing wrong with discussing his family, friends, and ministers. A person is judged by the company he keeps.
