That was what the designers of the original Channel Tunnel proposed. They would line England's side with explosives and flood the tunnel if the French tried to cross.
The project was still put down. This idea seems like it may be scrapped too, for the same reason. Personally, I don't see it happening, but there ARE a lot of people still worried enough about them damn rooskies that there will be a large stink over it. Marching armies are ancient history at such a scale, but the sheep seem to love to be scared.

Its pretty simple logic. dont take it personal. If your not a fear monger you can still not like it. I still think its a good idea. |

I would think Putin isn't that lame. He has goals and plans too. And the military to back him. Sure a lot is old but they have been developing hi tech stuff for their fighters and missile systems. I understand they have a fighter missile just made to take out any aircraft carrier that flys at 5 times the speed of sound. But NATO and America have plans and the goals are not to take over another country like his are. I know it looks like we are runnning Iraq, but our goal there isn't to take it over!

That is a stretch of imagination. Why is this thread in the American Politics forum? Everything I have read on this so far that has been posted here is about Russia, therefore appropriate for the International Politics forum. I have been looking for American reactions to the proposal but have not been able to find anything.

You may not be afraid of bullets either, but that doesn't make you any safer from them.

This project will help US economy as well.
As soon as US starts getting oil and gas from Russia, American troops can leave Iraq, and in the future US won't have to pay for oil with lives of its citizens in the Middle East..... The tunnel -- which will include a highway, high-speed rail lines, pipelines, and high-power cables -- will run under the sea in the Bering Strait and connect Russia directly to Alaska. At 103 kilometers long, it will be over twice as long as the Channel Tunnel between England and France. Tsar Nicholas II approved plans in 1905 to connect Siberia and Alaska via an undersea tunnel, but the outbreak of World War I and Nicholas' subsequent death prevented construction from ever starting.
