Ok, so lets say we go automated, at some expense, maybe a thousand a bomb plane using whatever you like. How about gas cocktail with the suggested HE to spread it around with the plane parts when it blows.

That has some advantages, though I think you don't realize how much anything the army decides to do cost. "Everything takes longer and costs more" is the mantra of bureaucracies worldwide, and the army is no exception. Still, let's go with a conservative $10k a shot, basically a guided missile with an HE and incendiary (napalm, thermite, or just plain jellied gasoline) warhead. What are you going to use it on? Terrorists like to camp out in apartment buildings, schools, hospitals and the like whenever possible, because it discourages us from bombing them for fear of collateral damage. Let's say you discover the bad guys have a weapon depot in the basement of an apartment block. What use will that plane thing be now? It can hardly go underground. You either use troops to take 'em out or blow up the whole building, and you can't give advance warning to the residents.

I'm sure pictures of burning, collapsing apartment buildings and maimed Iraqis will look great on CNN.

I agree. And I am thinking, if we are extracted from the scene they won't be killing anyone. So no need for the planes.

I would like to believe that our absence is all that is necessary for the violence to end. That remains to be seen.

I would imagine any forces we leave there on bases are going to get mortared and rocketed every night.
