I think it's pretty damned idiotic to have a mental disorder (in this case a gender identity disorder) but instead of treating the disorder giving in to it by changing one's physiology. If these people really believe that they're the opposite sex then it's the belief that needs to change and not the body.
Another reason to dismiss all this psychology crap out of hand.

A panda walks into a cafe. He orders a sandwich, eats it, then draws a gun and fires two shots in the air.
"Why?" asks the confused waiter, as the panda makes toward the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder.
"I'm a panda," he says at the door. "Look it up."
