I think slashing the CEO's $50 million salary would certainly be preferable to always hammering the workers to "save money." At the very least it's a good PR move, even it they are so far in the hole it barely matters.
It never happens though. The ones who run the company into the ground always seem to get the big parachute/severance packages and rewards.
