There could be a shift in power structure. The North Korean leadership is made up of old folkies: over 70% of the national council is over the age of 65. The hardliner image being presented is conjured from people with memories of the Korean War. Let's remember that during the Korean War the United States actively encouraged South Korean officials to root out any and all Soviet sympathizers and kill them. Trying to present ourselves as good people is kind of absurd in their eyes.
