Check out the thread about the Tesla electric hybrid getting 220 mpg with new battery (nano) technology. They will be making a Prius like hybrid family car in the near future. They will also be making a all electric plug in alternative for the same model.

In other developments, a system for using acceleration to generate electricity is being developed. If you add this to a hybrid that generates electricity from braking, you migh substantially increase the range of a car between recharges.
