Actually, even a 100% efficent panel, would not power the car enough for long use. My Wagon (subaru outback) has a roof that is about 2.5 sq meters. That would only 3.5 kW, which would make a total of 18 kWh a day, which would cover about 75 miles a day, or 1 1/2 hours on a freeway, making for road trips to be slow. And that's with everything (including the motor) running at 100%. What would be needed would be a more powerful battery, and use the panels as a supplement.
