Are you kidding? The KKK started with supporting the democratic party (back at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th). But anyway, who the kkk supports does not make that party equal to them. Otherwise we could just say that the democratic party is all equal to Rev Wright, or Spitzer, or any number of individuals that are members of that party.
The fact is (whether you like it or not), the Republican party had a stronger support for the Civil Rights act than the Democratic party. So was the 18th amendment (
women's rights) with (rep 36-8, dem 20-17). We can point out bad seeds and individuals all day, but individuals do not equal the entire party.
